West Yorkshire’s Indian summer has ruled out the likes of former King George hero Thistlecrack from Saturday’s Charlie Hall Chase (2.40pm) at Wetherby, but good ground and three miles should be absolutely perfect for Slad sorcerer Tom George’s Double Shuffle (5/2).

At first glance the selection looks a bit of a risky proposition, as he hasn’t got his head in front for almost two years, although that doesn’t really tell the whole story as since then he’s finished runner-up four times in seven starts and surely deserves another victory.

Those seconds include an incredible effort in last season’s King George, when he belied insulting odds of 50-1 to just find Might Bite too powerful and if he can reproduce that form, he’s definitely good enough to bag the win here.

Sure, his two subsequent efforts were disappointing, but perhaps the ground was an influence and this faster surface could be the key.

Warren Greatrex landed the bet365 Hurdle (3.15pm) at the same venue with Cole Harden in 2014 and he can repeat the trick with flamboyant owner Max McNeill’s Keeper Hill (8/1).

This fella reverts to the smaller obstacles after a season chasing, which included frustration with tumbles at both Musselburgh, where he was tanking along in front before departing at the fourth last, and Cheltenham, and an operation over the summer.

But the fancy wasn’t far off the best over timber before that and his defeat of Messire Des Obeaux last year at Huntingdon reads particularly well, as that one went on to finish third in two top-class heats at Cheltenham and Aintree.

Greatrex recently reported his charge is a better horse now than when last seen over hurdles, which bodes badly for his rivals.

Some good ground should also suit Paul Nicholls’s Adrien Du Pont (11/2) in the Sodexho Gold Cup Handicap Chase (3.35pm) at Ascot.

The six-year-old steps up to three miles, which might just allow him a bit more time to organise himself and gradually creep into the race. That could be interesting for the BetVictor Gold Cup later in the month were he to do the business here.

Slightly different fare Saturday evening at Churchill Downs in the States, where the glitz and glamour of the Breeders’ Cup is live on At The Races. European interest is centred on whether or not dual Arc heroine Enable can defy history in the Turf? (8.56pm)

No horse, including turf greats like Dancing Brave and Golden Horn, have achieved this magnificent double and while Enable has had a less busy season than any of her predecessors, preference goes to Chantilly conjuror Andre Fabre’s Waldgeist (6/1).

This Galileo colt could only muster fourth behind Enable in the French extravaganza, but he had a much worse draw and didn’t enjoy a clear passage with less than two furlongs to run.

The Europeans have a strong hand in the Mile (7.36pm) with seven of the top eight in the betting and I Can Fly (10/1) might do just that after her second to Classic contender Roaring Lion last month.
