Greenham Stakes winner James Garfield is set to drop back in trip after finishing seventh in the 2000 Guineas on Saturday.

The Exceed And Excel colt was trainer George Scott's first runner in a Classic and had the assistance of Frankie Dettori in the saddle.

After travelling well, he came under pressure a furlong out and was eventually beaten just over four lengths, with the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot now a likely target.

"We were very pleased with his run and I think it will turn out to be a strong Guineas. The mile possibly just stretched him so we will probably come back to six furlongs and go for the Commonwealth Cup," said Scott.

"He is a Group Two winner and he has had two hard races, so we will take it as they come. My gut reaction is we will freshen him up for the Commonwealth Cup and the programme really picks up for the sprinters afterwards.

"I'd imagine he will have a busy second half of the season.

"He has run a brilliant race and he wasn't beaten far in seventh. I think all the right horses came to the fore and, in time, I think it will turn out to be a cracking race."
